JW Fishers has added pingers
and a pinger receiver to their extensive line of underwater
search equipment. Pingers
are acoustic devices that can be attached to, or dropped on, any
underwater site and allow the site to be quickly and easily
relocated. The
pinger’s acoustic signal is detected by the pinger receiver
which can be carried by a diver or deployed from a boat.
Some common uses for these tracking devices are; marking
the location of an underwater construction site or shipwreck,
tagging water monitoring instruments such as current or salinity
gauges, identifying the position of a benthic habitat under
study, or to mark the beginning and end of a fish or trap line.
JW Fishers pingers are commercial-grade and come in
two different types; the single frequency pinger and the
multifrequency pinger. The
single frequency pinger (SFP-1) transmits only one frequency.
The user chooses one of four transmit frequencies at the
time of order, and the SFP-1 frequency is set at the factory.
The multifrequency pinger (MFP-1) lets the operator
select any of 60 different transmit frequencies.
Using multiple pingers, with each transmitting a
different frequency, allows multiple targets in the same area to
be marked and individually located.
The operator can change the transmit frequency of each
MFP-1 at any time. Both
models of pingers let the user select the number of pings per
second, the amount of time each ping lasts, and the output
power. These
parameters determine how long the pinger will operate and how
far away it can be detected by the receiver.
Power for the pingers is supplied by two standard 9 volt
alkaline batteries. Lithium
batteries can be used to extend the operating time, or for even
longer operating time a larger housing that holds more batteries
is available. The
operator can choose either automatic start when the pinger is
placed in the water or a manual start activated by a switch.
The pinger receiver (PR-1) can locate any pinger
transmitting a frequency between 3 and 97 kHz.
When the receiver is tuned to the desired frequency and
pointed in the direction of the pinger, an audio signal is
emitted from the underwater earphone and an LED light bar
flashes indicating the pinger has been located.
A compass mounted on top of the PR-1 provides the diver
with the precise heading to the target.
As he approaches the pinger the audio alarm increases in
volume and more LEDs are illuminated on the light bar.
The PR-1 is powered by a rechargeable battery pack
that will operate for 30 continuous hours.
Two battery chargers are provided with the system
allowing charging from either 120 volt AC supply or a 12 volt DC
supply. A 220 volt
charger is also available.
The pingers and pinger receiver, like all of Fishers
underwater search systems, are covered by a two year warranty.
