An easier way to perform underwater searches
A
new software package being offered by JW Fishers makes it easy
to do a thorough magnetometer search of any underwater area. The
Tracker II software is specially designed to work with Fishers
Proton 3 and Proton 4 mags. Magnetometers are one of the most
sought after and effective tools for underwater searches. These
high power metal detectors are extremely sensitive to ferrous
(iron/steel) metals and have been credited with finding
thousands of shipwrecks worth billions of dollars. Magnetometers
work by sensing changes in the earth’s magnetic field. Steel
ships create such a large magnetic disturbance that they can be
detected from a quarter mile away or more. Even old wooden
wrecks can be located with a mag because of the magnetic
signature formed by iron hardware used in their construction and
the iron they carried on board such as stoves, anchors, chains,
cannons, cannon balls, etc.
The Tracker software allows the mag operator to know the exact status of the search at any point in time. Three key pieces of information are shown on the screen. In the upper left of the screen is a graph with latitude and longitude as the X and Y axis showing the path of the boat as it moves through the search area. On the right hand side of the screen are the last 21 readouts from the mag and the boat’s position coordinates displayed as a cascading waterfall. At the bottom left of the screen is a graphical representation of the last 5 minutes of readouts displayed in the form of a strip chart, making it easy to see when a target is detected by the spike drawn on the graph. Other information displayed includes the boat’s speed and compass heading, along with the mag’s gamma sensitivity setting and alarm setting. All data can be stored on the PC for future reference. The software is priced at only $995 and can be installed on any PC with Windows 95 or above.
