RMD-1 is a complete underwater metal detection system that can
be attached to almost any ROV or towed underwater vehicle. The
metal detector sensor is mounted on the underwater device and
the output is monitored at the surface. The RMD-1 can locate and
track underwater pipes and cables, find lost propellers and
dredge heads, and reveal sunken treasure. For several years
Fishers has been supplying the remote metal detector to a
variety of users including the US Navy, commercial diving
companies, and professional treasure hunters for use in water
depths up to 1,000 feet. The system is now available with search
coils that are rated for full ocean depth. These deep ocean
coils were originally built for a Navy application but are now
being offered to all customers.
This unique metal detection system was specially designed to work with ROVs. The RMD-1’s dual coil design has high immunity to the electrical noise generated by the vehicle’s motors and electronics. The coil set is mounted on nonmetallic struts extending in front of the ROV and will detect large metal objects more than 5 feet away. The standard coil size is 10" by 16" with larger coils available which have an even greater detection range.
The base RMD-1 system consists of a surface control/display unit, 150 foot cable, the dual coil set, and an underwater housing with preamp electronics. Several different system configurations and option packages are available to best meet the user’s requirements. The RMD-1 can be supplied with cable lengths up to 1,000 feet or use the ROV umbilical to transmit the metal detector’s output signal to the topside display. An RS232 option on the "downstairs" electronics unit, operating in conjunction with the ROV’s multiplexer, allows the RMD-1 output to be transmitted over even longer lengths of umbilical cable. Topside, the detector’s output is displayed on it’s own control unit, or with an RS232 option, displayed and stored on a PC. Both the topside and downstairs electronics unit can be powered by a variety of voltages including 220 vac,120 vac, or 9 to 36 vdc.
